I am a yoga teacher by trade. What a blessing! I am eternally grateful to have found my svad-dharma early in life. I have been teaching yoga and training yoga teachers for almost two decades now. I have had the opportunity to study yoga with some amazing teachers, primarily within the Kripalu community, and also with shamanic teachers wihin the indigenous Mayan community. Here I have found my spiritual family…

These days I am lit up about Yok'hah Maya….I am on a mission to widen the definition of yoga to reflect it's universal origins, which take form in variety of expressions around the world - anywhere you find the Family of Light. One of these forms evolved in the Mayalands of Mexico and Central America long ago: Yok'hah Maya. I am currently one of a handful of individuals teaching Yok'hah Maya under the tutelage of indigenous Mayan Elder Hunbatz Men.

What is significant about Yok'hah Maya?  Personally, it has blown my mind to discover yoga right here in my own North American back yard. Who knew? And now that I know, as a yogi practicing in the West, it feels essential to include the yoga teachings of the Americas, of the Native Americans. It provides a satisfying balance between the wisdom of the East and the West. The voice of the Maya provides a perspective that is as wide as the cosmos,and at the same time completely rooted in respect for the living spirit of the Earth. We can learn a thing or two from them….

Yok'hah Maya is also significant because we are, according to ancient Mayan prophecy, about the enter the New Age of Light. Translation: The New Age of Enlightenment. A new era in the evolution of humanity where we are poised to attain the state of enlightenment as our birthright. I think that is big-time exciting ….and I know intuitvely that to manifest ths reality it is essential to embrace the teachings of yoga, especially Yok'hah Maya. After that, we will no longer need the ladder to get there….

Yok'hah literally means 'to ascend to the highest truth'. It also implies bringing that truth down to earth to serve the world. I like that. For me (Taurus Sun and Moon), yoga must be practical, active, and of service to the individual and the community. Especially these times of transition, there is no room for complacency.

Most of the yoga community has not heard of Yok'hah Maya. I am committed to changing that….that's why I'm here…I sense a community of kindred spirits here on Gaia. I am excited to see what we will co-create together…
